Moving can be tough. It can be draining, expensive, and super stressful if you don't have the right tools. Up until the age of 19-years-old, I had never moved before. Needless to say, when I was getting ready to move for the first time as a college sophomore, I was FREAKING out. Where would I even start? My head was spinning and the anxieties of the process definitely overshadowed what should have been an exciting new chapter. Having now moved over 10 times since then, I can say I've definitely learned a thing or two about what makes a successful move versus a chaotic move. Each one became easier and smoother, and it was all thanks to the little (but long) notepad I kept adding to in my head. Remember, moves aren't only physical. There can be so many different emotions tied to relocation, no matter how close or how far away they might be. So, I'm here to share with you everything I’ve learned, guide you through the groundwork for your new beginning, and give you my best tips for your next move–wherever your journey may take you.
1. Start early and plan ahead
Trust me, procrastination has no business in moving. Take it one step at a time and do a little bit each day to avoid unnecessary stress. Starting to clean, organize, pack, and make all of the necessary arrangements before you think you’ll need to will give you time to keep track of everything and maybe even some extra time to tie any loose ends you weren't anticipating.

2. Do your research and book your moving company as soon as possible
If you plan on hiring movers, you’ll want to reach out to multiple companies ASAP to get the best quote possible for your moving needs. Big Deahl’s Movers, located in San Bernardino County, have helped many people make both residential and commercial moves quickly and effectively. They prioritize the safety and security of their customers + their belongings so that the move is completely stress-free for everyone involved! Whether you’re moving within California or from California to another state, these long distance movers in Rancho Cucamonga are happy to help put your mind at ease during such a busy time. Go check them out and request a free quote to see if they’re the right option for you.
3. Go room by room
I’ve found that breaking up the sorting, packing, and cleaning by individual rooms really helps to manage a large move. It allows you to give your undivided attention to each part of your life, and it feels AWESOME when you get to check off an entire room on your to-do list!
4. Be resourceful with packing
There are so many different ways to pack, and it can be tempting to buy rolls of bubble wrap for everything fragile. But this can get expensive, time-consuming, and not exactly eco-friendly. Instead, try wrapping your delicate items (plates, mugs, and anything breakable) in clothing, towels, or blankets. It’s amazing how many mugs I’ve rolled securely into my old nightshirts!
5. Label all boxes
Be sure that after filling up each box you label on top and on the sides. A lot of these boxes will be stacked on top of one another for a bit, so make sure they're easy to read for the unpacking stage.
6. Clean each room AFTER it's boxed up and emptied
The idea of cleaning after packing can seem daunting. This is why I suggest cleaning as you go. After each room is packed away, you’ll be able to get into the cracks and crevices and clean it fully.
7. Pack a bag for the first few nights in your new place
For the first few nights after your move, things might be a little hectic and that’s ok! To make things easy, pack essentials for a few days into a separate box, tote bag, or suitcase. This includes toiletries, clothes, shoes, towels, chargers, Keurig, you name it. Anything you use on a daily basis that you don’t want to go without should be easily accessible.
8. Keep a list of everything you'll need/want after the move
When you’re envisioning new things you want in your next place, make a list on Excel or Google Docs and share it with the person you’re moving with (if applicable). And if you have extra time, do some research on the product(s) and link them for yourself to return to later. What's easier than *click* *click* *purchase*?
9. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it
Moving is a BIG task! Especially if you’re doing it in between a full-time job or just the craziness of life. If you have friends and family nearby, remember that it’s ok to ask for help along the way.
10. Take time for yourself to relax and de-stress through the process
No matter the progress you’ve made in a day, a week, or a month, it’s crucial to set aside time for yourself during a move. Whenever you can safely step away from packing and take breaks, do it. Self-care is hard work's best friend!
